What is a Coalition?
A coalition is a diverse group of individuals, organizations, and communities that work together in an atmosphere of support and respect to solve common problems too big for one group alone. The common goal among Springfield Prevention Coalition’s members is to building a safe, healthy, and drug-free community.
History:
After suffering the loss of several high school students to alcohol related crashes in 1998, members of the community organized to address the alcohol problem in Springfield. The group secured a New Directions grant from the Department of Health to address underage drinking, and focused efforts at the middle school by funding a full-time Student Assistance Professional (SAP) to support the students.
In 2002, the group which had been working under the New Directions grant adopted its current name: the Springfield Prevention Coalition (SPC). Under its new name, the coalition grew to partner with other agencies and developed several working committees. The coalition was active building supports for young people, including a mentoring program which then grew to flourish on its own, and expanding the SAP program to the high school.
SPC continued its efforts to prevent substance abuse through its official recognition as a non-profit organization in February, 2006. As a 501c3 non-profit, the organization is now tax-exempt, can collect donations that are tax deductible for donors, and act as its own fiscal agent.
As a nonprofit, the SPC has continued to develop its organizational structure, formalize relationships and responsibilities in the community, and grow professionally as an employer.
